TheLakeInsider was started by Ben Hoadley, who owns and operates waterfront rentals on Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes. Every season brought the same problem: the information a guest actually needs — where to eat, which winery has the view, which boat launch has the shortest line, when the town gets crowded — was scattered across search results, tourism sites, rental platforms, and whatever a local happened to mention in passing.
So he started writing it down properly, lake by lake, the way he'd explain it to a friend renting the house for the first time. That became the guide to Seneca. Then the rest of the Finger Lakes. Then lakes he doesn't own property on at all — researched and written the same way, because the approach wasn't really about one lake. It was about giving travelers a straight answer instead of an algorithm.
Alongside the guides, TheLakeInsider keeps a shortlist of independent properties worth knowing — places we'd recommend regardless of who owns them. Some of those operators want help building their own direct-booking site; when that comes up, we point them to SpokeBnB, a separate business for that. TheLakeInsider itself doesn't build websites or sell services to operators — it's a publication, not an agency.
