The places that don't make you apologize for the kids. Restaurants with crayons that aren't an afterthought, parks with shade and bathrooms, the ice-cream stop with the line on a hot Tuesday.
An ice cream stand on S Straits Highway with dairy-free and sugar-free flavors in rotation alongside the usual soft-serve, Dole Whip included some weeks. Large portions, a walk-up window, and an expanded patio that catches the after-beach crowd off Devoe Beach and the state park. Open daily from noon, closing an hour earlier on Sundays than the rest of the week.
Indian River's downtown diner since before most of the other S Straits Highway storefronts existed — more than 80 years serving the same kind of scratch breakfast, chicken fried steak, corned beef hash, and cinnamon rolls the size of a bread plate. No pretense, just a full room by 9 on a Saturday. Open at 8 daily; Friday and Saturday stay open through dinner, the rest of the week closes at 2.
A drive-through coffee shop with a gift shop built onto the side — order the flower power latte and browse the boutique while it's made. Everything runs on house-made syrup rather than a bottled base, and the seating inside is comfortable enough that dine-in beats the drive-through line most mornings. Open at 7 on weekdays, an hour later on weekends, closing at 4 most days.
A breakfast-and-lunch room on S Straits Highway that closes at 3 and doesn't bother staying open for dinner — the buffet is the draw, plus a small-town, nobody's-a-stranger feel that regulars mention more than any single dish. Straightforward diner food, reasonable prices, open every day of the week. Go before 9 on a Saturday if the buffet line matters.
Established in 1921 on the lake's southeast corner — 2,000 feet of sand beach so shallow it stays three feet deep a hundred yards out, which makes it the easier swim than the open lake past the drop-off. The campground spreads across several loops between the beach and the woods; ask for a water-view site if a boat's coming along. A separate dog beach sits on the park's south end. Boat launch on site; Recreation Passport required.
A free Tuscarora Township beach at the mouth of the Indian River, a walk from downtown rather than a drive — Burt Lake without the state park's camping fee or crowds. The Veterans Memorial Fishing Pier reaches out over the shallow cove and is wheelchair accessible end to end. The township runs its Fourth of July fireworks off this beach every summer, with picnic tables and a pavilion for the rest of the season.
Local produce and crafts set up in the Citizens National Bank parking lot downtown, June through October — the closest thing Indian River has to a town square on a Saturday morning. A second, smaller session runs Wednesday afternoons for anyone who missed the weekend selection. Saturdays 8 to 1, Wednesdays 2 to 6, gone by November until the following spring.
