The Missoula Floods' Legacy

Officially classified as a glacial reservoir, the lake was carved roughly 12,000 to 15,000 years ago when the Purcell Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet dammed the Clark Fork River, repeatedly filling and bursting through an ice dam in the same Missoula Floods that shaped neighboring Lake Pend Oreille. The lake is long attributed, in local tourism material, to a National Geographic ranking among the five most beautiful lakes in the world — a claim repeated everywhere but never traced to a specific issue or year.
