The list nobody Instagrams. Where to grocery-shop on a Saturday afternoon. Which gas station's open at 11. Where the pharmacy is at six on a Sunday. The closest urgent care if the kid hits the dock the wrong way.
We list the boring stuff so the vacation works.
Burlington's community-owned grocery co-op since 1973, two blocks off Church Street — a hot and cold food bar, a made-to-order sandwich counter, and more than 3,500 Vermont-made products on the shelves. Open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Membership isn't required to shop, but the discount adds up fast for a week-long rental doing its own cooking.
The second City Market location on Flynn Avenue, in the same South End corridor as Switchback and Speeder & Earl's — smaller footprint than downtown but the same co-op pricing and local sourcing. The easier stop if you're staying south of downtown and don't want to fight Church Street parking for groceries.
South Hero's actual grocery store since 1974 — the Horne family runs a bakery, a deli with an in-house butcher, a Citgo gas pump, and Vermont's state liquor store all under one roof on Route 2. For anyone renting on the Islands, this is the provisioning stop; there isn't a full supermarket closer than the mainland. Open seven days.
A century-old Vermont country store on North Hero's Main Street — a deli counter, Vermont-made goods, and the kind of general-store inventory that covers whatever a lake week didn't pack. The obvious stop before a Knight Point picnic or a Pier Bar dinner if you need something on the way.
Bike rentals right off the Island Line Trail at Steele Street — the practical answer if you didn't bring your own bike for the Colchester Causeway ride. Proceeds fund Local Motion's broader advocacy work, which also runs the bike ferry across the Cut. Rent here rather than hauling a bike from home for a single ride out to the causeway.
Vermont's own convenience and gas chain, headquartered in South Burlington with locations spread through the Chittenden County side of the lake — Shell, Sunoco, and Citgo fuel depending on the location, plus Ben & Jerry's and Green Mountain Coffee on the shelves. The reliable fill-up before heading north toward the Islands, where gas gets scarcer.
Vermont's only Level 1 Trauma Center, on Colchester Avenue — 24-hour emergency care for the entire lake, not just Burlington. About twenty-five minutes from South Hero, closer to an hour from North Hero or Basin Harbor. Save the address before a trip rather than searching for it mid-emergency.
The Fanny Allen Campus urgent care in Colchester — no appointment needed, open seven days, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with on-site labs, imaging, and an outpatient pharmacy. The better call than the ER for anything that isn't a true emergency, and closer to the Islands than downtown Burlington.
A primary care practice in South Hero serving South Hero, North Hero, and Grand Isle directly — not an urgent care or ER, but the closest medical office to any Islands rental. Monday through Friday, 7:45 to 4:30. For anything acute, the drive to Colchester's Fanny Allen urgent care or the UVM ER in Burlington is still the move.
