Lake Dunmore · When it rains

When the lake's grey.

The tasting room with a fire going. The bookstore that doesn't mind if you stay two hours. The museum nobody on TripAdvisor mentions. Rain on a lake is one of the better problems to have.

    Woodchuck Cider House
    Editor's pick

Cidery and tap room off Route 7 on Exchange Street — Vermont Cider Company's production plant, with a self-guided tour through the history of Woodchuck cider before you land at a tap room pouring twenty rotating ciders. Open Wednesday through Sunday. The gift shop stocks seasonal flavors, like Guava Basil, that never make it into the grocery-store six-pack.

    Middlebury Falls
    Editor's pick

An eighteen-foot waterfall spanning roughly a hundred and seventy feet across Otter Creek, right in the middle of downtown — visible from the Main Street bridge and a footbridge behind the Marble Works. No hike required, no fee, and it runs more dramatic after a wet spring than most visitors expect from a waterfall inside a college town's downtown.

  • Middlebury
    Downtown Middlebury Historic District

The commercial core along Main Street and Merchants Row, anchored by the falls and the nineteenth-century mill buildings that now hold shops, cafes, and the Marble Works complex. Middlebury College sits a short walk uphill, which keeps the sidewalks busier than a town this size would otherwise support. Park once and walk the whole district in under twenty minutes.

  • Middlebury
    Middlebury College Museum of Art

Free museum inside the college's performing arts center on Porter Field Road — several thousand objects spanning ancient to contemporary, with rotating loan exhibits alongside the permanent Asian art and European painting collections. The right rainy-morning stop when a Falls of Lana hike gets rained out. No admission fee, and the lot rarely fills outside graduation weekend.

  • Middlebury
    Stone Mill Public Market
    Editor's pick

Retail market inside an 1840 stone mill on Mill Street — a wine and cheese counter, stationery, home goods, and a coffee bar under exposed timber framing. Locals call it their mud-season fix, the place to spend an hour in April when the trails are unwalkable. Pick up picnic provisions and eat them on the patio over Otter Creek.
