Bayview
Navy Acoustic Research Detachment

A U.S. Navy base at Bayview that has tested the acoustic properties of submarines and surface ships in Lake Pend Oreille's deep, quiet water since the 1960s — the lake's 1,150-foot depth and lack of ocean-noise interference make it an ideal stand-in for open-water testing. Idaho's own small submarine fleet, dating to the 1940s Farragut Naval Training Station, still operates here.
