What's the closest airport to Cayuga Lake?
Ithaca Tompkins Regional (ITH) is five minutes from the south end and books via Delta and United. Elmira–Corning (ELM) is 45 minutes south with the widest fare range. Syracuse (SYR) is an hour from the north end via I-90; Rochester (ROC) is 75 minutes and usually the cheapest.
How long does it take to drive around Cayuga Lake?
About two hours nonstop along the 87-mile Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway — NY-89 down the west shore, NY-90 up the east. Plan a full day if you're stopping. A winery-and-lunch loop with three tastings runs closer to seven hours door-to-door.
East shore or west shore — which side of Cayuga Lake?
West shore (NY-89) has the wineries, Taughannock Falls, and the GrassRoots crowd out of Trumansburg. East shore (NY-90) is quieter, more upscale, Aurora village, Long Point State Park. Wine trip and hikes: west. Quiet couples weekend and one great dinner: east.
Is parking a problem at Taughannock Falls in summer?
Yes on Saturdays and Sundays from June through August. The main lot at Taughannock Falls State Park fills by 10 AM on hot weekends. Park at the overlook lot on the rim, or launch from Dean's Cove ten minutes north and skip the main lot altogether.

Wegmans on South Meadow Street in Ithaca is the south-end move — open 6 AM to midnight and worth the drive from anywhere on the lake for a serious provision run. Tops in Trumansburg handles the west shore. Auburn's Wegmans covers the north end.
Where's the closest urgent care?
Cayuga Health Urgent Care in Ithaca is the south-end option, open until 9 PM most days. Cayuga Medical Center handles emergencies south. On the north end, Auburn Community Hospital ER is the closest 24-hour room. Geneva General is 25 minutes from Aurora if the east shore is your base.
Where's the cheapest gas around Cayuga Lake?
Stations in Ithaca and Auburn usually run 15–20 cents below the wine-trail stretches on NY-89 and NY-90. Fill up at either end of the lake before you commit to the drive; there are stretches over 20 miles without a station between Interlaken and Trumansburg.

Which Cayuga Lake wineries are worth the drive?

Cayuga Lake or Seneca Lake for wine?

What's there to do on Cayuga Lake when it rains?
The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art on Cornell's campus is free, I.M. Pei-designed, and has the best gallery-plus-view combo in Ithaca. Del Lago Resort near the north end handles a bigger rainy-day group. Winery tasting rooms are indoor by design — Knapp has the full restaurant.
Is Taughannock Falls State Park worth visiting?
Yes — the 215-foot waterfall is taller than Niagara and the gorge trail walks you straight to the base in 0.75 mi flat. Go before 10 AM on summer weekends or after 4 PM. The north-rim trail is the overlook shot; the lakefront beach is a separate stop.
When is the GrassRoots Festival and does it affect lodging?
Third weekend of July at the Trumansburg Fairgrounds — 34th edition in 2026, four days, 75-plus acts. Lodging within 20 miles books a year in advance and rates double. The whole west shore is functionally inaccessible by car between 4 PM Thursday and noon Monday. Plan around it or into it.

Stewart Park and Cass Park beaches in Ithaca at the head of the lake. Taughannock Falls beach on the west shore, Long Point on the east, Cayuga Lake State Park at the north end — all lifeguarded in season. The lake stays cold well into June and hits 70°F by mid-July.
Where's the best sunset spot on Cayuga Lake?
The east shore wins — the sun drops behind the west ridge from about 6 PM on. Long Point State Park is the free-and-easy pick. Sheldrake Point Winery on the west shore has the dock-level tasting for a Riesling-in-hand sunset. Stewart Park at the south end for the head-of-lake reflection.
Where can I rent a boat on Cayuga Lake?
Cayuga Lake Boat Rentals stages at Dean's Cove on the west shore — pontoons, fishing boats, kayaks, family-run and pet-friendly. FLX Marine out of Union Springs covers the north end. School's Out Charters runs captained trips out of Lansing when you don't want to drive.

Is Cayuga Lake good for families with kids?
Yes — Stewart Park at the head of the lake has the carousel and the playground, Buttermilk Falls has the natural swimming pool, and Cayuga Lake Creamery on NY-89 is the drive-thru ice-cream stop. Long Point State Park has the four-lane launch and the sandy swim area on the east shore.
Where can kids swim safely on Cayuga Lake?
Lifeguarded swim areas at Robert H. Treman (the Lucifer Falls pool), Buttermilk Falls (the natural pool), Taughannock Falls beach, and Long Point State Park on the east shore. Cayuga is deep and cold quickly — stick to the lifeguarded beaches, not private docks, with kids under ten.

How dog-friendly is Cayuga Lake?
Better than a wine region has any right to be. Sheldrake Point Winery and Treleaven Wines both allow leashed dogs on the patio. Aurora Brewing Company has the beer garden. State parks allow dogs on leash but not on swim beaches. Finger Lakes National Forest is the off-leash play.

When's the best time to visit Cayuga Lake?
Late September through mid-October — wineries pour the new vintage, foliage is peak, and Cornell alumni weekend crowds have gone. Late June is the second-best window before the July heat. Avoid the GrassRoots weekend on the west shore unless you have tickets. November through April is closed-operator territory.
When does fall foliage peak on Cayuga Lake?
Second and third weeks of October, with the south end (Ithaca gorges) coloring a week before the north (Seneca Falls). The drive down NY-89 from Interlaken to Trumansburg is the foliage move — dropping road, lake on your left going south, hills on your right.
When does boat season open on Cayuga Lake?
State-park marinas launch in early May and pull docks by mid-October. Water's too cold for swimming until early June and hits 70°F by mid-July. The bass season opens the third Saturday of June; lake trout are legal year-round with the right license.
