Grand Lake (Colorado)

Grand Lake is Colorado's largest natural lake by surface area, roughly 507 acres, and its deepest, plunging over 300 feet, formed by glacial action roughly 10,000 to 30,000 years ago when a terminal moraine dammed the basin. The Ute people called it Spirit Lake, believing its cold waters held the spirits of the dead; permanent settlement by trappers, miners, and homesteaders followed in the mid-1800s, with the town platted in 1881. The lake's North Inlet and East Inlet tributaries both flow down from Rocky Mountain National Park, and the town is widely marketed as the "headwaters" of the Colorado River, though the river's actual geologic source is about 20 miles north, inside the park. Grand Lake is also part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, a transmountain diversion system moving West Slope water to the Front Range. The town's wooden boardwalk, built in 1881 by shopkeepers to keep customers out of mud, remains the commercial spine of a small, seasonal resort community lined with more than 60 shops, restaurants, and bars. The Grand Lake Yacht Club, commonly described as the highest-elevation registered yacht club in the world, sails at roughly 8,269 feet. Grand Lake itself has no pharmacy and only a family-practice clinic — Granby, about 15 miles south, carries the area's full hospital and larger grocery options.
