A private lake, a public Village, and one tour boat.
Lake Arrowhead is a 780-acre reservoir in the San Bernardino Mountains that began as an abandoned 1891 irrigation project — the lake itself is private, open only to Arrowhead Lake Association members, but Lake Arrowhead Village and the Lake Arrowhead Queen tour boat welcome everyone.
Lake Arrowhead started in 1891 as the Little Bear Lake irrigation scheme, a dam project that collapsed into litigation over water rights before the Arrowhead Lake Company bought the unfinished dam in 1920, completed it in 1922, and reopened the property as a resort. The lake itself is private today — swimming and boating require Arrowhead Lake Association membership, and there's no public boat ramp or rental on the water. What is open to everyone: Lake Arrowhead Village, opened in 1923 in a Norman-style design with shops, restaurants, and a supermarket; and the Lake Arrowhead Queen, a public tour boat that's the one way a non-member can actually get out on the water. Belgian Waffle Works, dockside since 1982, is the Village's dining anchor. Lake Arrowhead itself covers the grocery run and the hospital.
