Duke Power built the 18,500-acre lake between 1968 and 1971 as part of the $700 million Keowee-Toxaway project, damming the Keowee and Little rivers for hydroelectric power and to cool the nearby Oconee Nuclear Station. The lake averages 54 feet deep with 300 miles of shoreline.
What's the closest airport to Lake Keowee?
Greenville-Spartanburg International (GSP) is the nearest with regular commercial service, about 50 miles and an hour's drive from Seneca. Charlotte Douglas (CLT) is a comparable secondary option for a wider range of flights.

What was on the land before Lake Keowee was flooded?
The former Cherokee town of Keowee — capital of the Lower Cherokee Nation — and the British colonial outpost Fort Prince George both sit roughly 200 feet below the surface. University of South Carolina archaeologists excavated both sites in the 18 months before the 1971 flooding.

Where can I rent a boat at Lake Keowee?
Keowee Marina and Lake Keowee Boat Rentals both operate out of Seneca with pontoon and tritoon fleets; Sunset Marina covers the lake's north end near Six Mile. South Cove County Park's three free ramps are the main public boat launch.
Is Lake Keowee the same as Lake Jocassee?
No — they're separate lakes whose access points sit about five minutes apart. Keowee is the larger, more developed lake at 18,500 acres with marinas and lakefront communities; Jocassee is smaller, far deeper, and largely undeveloped, reached through Devils Fork State Park.
