The largest human-made lake in the world, in 1926.
Lake Martin is a roughly 41,000-acre Alabama Power reservoir on the Tallapoosa River, created by Martin Dam in 1926 — the largest human-made lake in the world at the time, with more than 700 miles of shoreline and the largest state-operated campground in the country on its western shore.
Lake Martin sits in central Alabama near Alexander City and Dadeville, created when Alabama Power completed Martin Dam in 1926 after starting construction in 1923 — at the time, the largest human-made lake in the world. Originally called Cherokee Bluffs for the rock formation beneath the dam, it was renamed in 1936 for Thomas W. Martin, the Alabama Power president who helped draft the state's dam laws. Lakeside Marina's two locations, in Dadeville and at Bay Pines in Jackson's Gap, anchor the boat rental base; Kowaliga Restaurant and The Landing at Harbor Pointe cover the lakeside dining. Wind Creek State Park, seven miles south of Alexander City, has the largest state-operated campground in the United States — 626 sites, 157 of them waterfront — alongside a swimming beach and boat ramp. Alexander City, the Tallapoosa County seat, covers the grocery run and the hospital.
