1,645 feet at its deepest point — the second-deepest lake in the United States, after Crater Lake in Oregon. The basin formed through tectonic faulting starting roughly three million years ago, later scoured further by ice-age glaciers.
What's the closest airport to Lake Tahoe?
Reno-Tahoe International (RNO) is the nearest with regular commercial service, about an hour from the lake's north and south shores alike. San Francisco International (SFO) is the larger hub, roughly three and a half hours by road.

What is Emerald Bay?
A National Natural Landmark on the lake's West Shore, its glacier-carved granite framing the bay. Vikingsholm, a 38-room 1929 mansion built as a replica of a Scandinavian castle, sits at the water's edge and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Where can I rent a boat at Lake Tahoe?
Tahoe Keys Marina in South Lake Tahoe is the largest marina on the lake and its only inland marina. Tahoe City Marina covers the West Shore with 2-hour minimum rentals, and Zephyr Cove Marina rents from a sandy beach on the Nevada side.
Is Lake Tahoe in California or Nevada?
Both — the lake straddles the state line, with South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City on the California side and Zephyr Cove and Incline Village on the Nevada side.

When's the best time to visit Lake Tahoe?
Late spring through Labor Day for full marina hours and every lakefront restaurant open. Winter turns the lake into a ski destination instead, with the Heavenly Gondola running year-round for the view alone.
