Moosehead Lake · The table & the tap

Where to eat. Where to drink.

Restaurants we'd send our parents to, breweries we'd send our brother-in-law to. Filtered by quadrant where it matters — sun on the dock at six, dinner by seven.

  • Greenville
368 Maine at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake
    Editor's pick

The six-course prix fixe at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake, overlooking the water from a dining room that seats maybe forty on a full night. The kitchen leans on what actually grows and swims in this part of Maine — foraged mushrooms, lake-caught trout when the menu allows it, root vegetables held over from the fall harvest. Open Thursday through Sunday only, May through fall; walk-ins are taken but a Saturday reservation is the safer bet.

  • Monson
    The Quarry
    Editor's pick

Twenty minutes south in Monson, chef Marilou Ranta's dining room won a James Beard Award in 2023 — a genuine surprise for a restaurant this far from a city, and the reason people now build a Moosehead trip around a Monson dinner reservation instead of the other way around. The menu changes constantly, built around what a truck can actually deliver up Route 6 that week. Book ahead; the room seats only a few dozen.

  • Greenville Junction
    Kelly's Landing
    Editor's pick

Waterfront dining room on West Cove with a dock out back where the boat traffic doubles as the entertainment. Weekend mornings start at 7, which matters if breakfast is the plan before a day on the water. The fried haddock sandwich and the seafood chowder are what regulars order without looking at the menu. Outdoor seating fills first on a clear evening — get there before six if the table with the view matters.

  • Greenville
Stress Free Moose Pub & Cafe

Pub on Pritham Avenue pouring local Maine drafts alongside the usual bar-food menu, with live music often enough that it's worth checking the schedule before assuming a quiet dinner. The name is the pitch — no dress code, no rush, a crowd that's as much guide and outfitter staff as it is visitors. Closed Sunday, which is easy to forget until you're standing outside the door.

  • Greenville
    The Farm at Moosehead

Takeout operation on Moosehead Lake Road running a wood-fired oven for pizza alongside smoked baby back ribs — the order you call in on the way back from a day of fishing rather than a sit-down plan. No dining room to speak of. Order ahead in July and August; the wood-fired pizza sells out some nights before eight.

  • Rockwood
    Rockwood Bar & Grill
    Editor's pick

The gathering spot on the west shore, where the trail-and-fishing crowd trades stories over a beer at the end of the day. Loaded lobster rolls, a chowder worth ordering on a cold one, and a room that fills up fast once the Kineo ferry stops running for the evening. Closed Mondays. This is the one restaurant in Rockwood that isn't attached to a lodge's dining room.

Tue–Sun, breakfast through dinner; closed Mon
  • Rockwood
    Maynard's in Maine

Third-generation family lodge and dining room on the Moose River side of Rockwood, now run by the Gallant family, serving the kind of home-cooked plate that doesn't change much year to year and doesn't need to. Breakfast starts at seven, useful before an early Kineo ferry or a moose tour departure. The menu rotates day to day rather than running a fixed card — ask what's on before you sit down.

  • Rockwood
    The Birches Resort

Lakeside dining room at the resort on Moosehead's west shore, built around a Friday-and-Saturday prime rib dinner that's been the draw for years. Baked haddock and rib-eye round out the rest of the week. The dining room looks straight across open water toward Kineo, which makes the seven o'clock table in July the one worth requesting when booking.

Breweries

  • Monson
    Turning Page Farm Brewery
    Editor's pick

Small farm brewery in Monson, thirteen miles south, doubling as a goat dairy — the tasting room pours small-batch beer alongside the farm's own cheese. Open weekends only, which catches people planning a Tuesday drive down from Greenville off guard. The closest thing to a wine-country stop this lake has, on a scale that matches the rest of the market: modest, real, worth the drive once.
