Getting there & around

Logistics

What's the closest airport to Mullett Lake?
Pellston Regional Airport (PLN), with a handful of daily connections through Detroit, sits closest to both Topinabee and Cheboygan. For more flight options, Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City runs about ninety minutes south, and it's worth comparing fares before booking the smaller regional airport by default.
How far is Topinabee from Cheboygan?
About twelve miles by road or trail — the North Central State Trail runs the same corridor, directly along Mullett Lake's shore for most of it. By car it's a straight run up N Straits Highway, roughly fifteen minutes with no stops, past the marinas and hardware stores that thin out once you leave downtown Cheboygan.
Is Mullett Lake the same as Burt Lake?
No — two separate lakes connected by the Indian River channel, both part of the 38-mile Inland Waterway. Burt Lake sits southwest, with Indian River as its main town; Mullett Lake sits northeast, deeper and larger, with Topinabee as its only lakefront town and the Cheboygan River as its outlet to Lake Huron.
Groceries, gas, urgent care

Essentials

Where's the closest hospital to Mullett Lake?
McLaren Northern Michigan's Cheboygan campus on South Main Street runs a 24-hour emergency department about fifteen minutes from Topinabee and closer from Aloha State Park. It's the region's hospital, not just a Cheboygan clinic — save the address before a trip rather than searching mid-emergency.
Where's the closest grocery store to Mullett Lake?
Topinabee Market & Deli covers the basics — deli, beer cave, gas pumps — right on the lake, but for a real stock-up, Family Fare on South Main Street in Cheboygan has the bakery, produce, and meat counter a week of cooking needs, plus an in-store pharmacy.
Is there a pharmacy near Mullett Lake?
Two options, both in Cheboygan: Family Fare's in-store pharmacy on South Main Street, open weekdays 9 to 7 and Saturday until 3, and Modern Pharmacy downtown, an independent counter that's often the faster fill if you're not already at the grocery store.
Where to eat

Food & drink

Is there dock-and-dine on Mullett Lake?
Breakers Bar & Grill in Topinabee takes arrivals by boat as readily as by car, with a patio remodeled in 2012 to face the water directly. Downstream on the Cheboygan River, Pier M33 On The Cheboygan runs a 75-slip marina behind the restaurant for anyone finishing a run down the Inland Waterway.
Where do locals eat around Mullett Lake and Cheboygan?
Stormy Kromer's Cap & Ale House downtown, for the cap shop and the beer in one room. Duncan City Pizza on a weeknight, for the hand-spun dough. Cheboygan Coffee Roasters before nine, before the tourist crowd finds it. In Topinabee, it's Cafe Noka's patio, not Breakers, on an average Tuesday.
What's worth doing

Things to do

What's the Inland Waterway like from Mullett Lake?
Mullett Lake is the last and deepest lake before the Cheboygan River carries the Inland Waterway into Lake Huron. Nautical North Family Adventures runs the water side of it from Cheboygan — a Mullett Lake fireworks cruise every July 4th, a Landlubbers Lock Tour through the Cheboygan Lock, and a full 38-mile Inland Waterway Expedition in a single day.
What's there to do around Mullett Lake when it rains?
The History Center of Cheboygan County's three buildings — a general collection, a Victorian sheriff's house and jail, and a log cabin — cover a couple of hours downtown. The Cheboygan Opera House runs a season of theater and music for anyone willing to check the calendar first. Cheboygan Brewing Company's taproom works too, rain or not.
Where does the North Central State Trail run along Mullett Lake?
The trail leaves Indian River, crosses the Indian River spreads, and reaches Topinabee after 5.4 miles, ending at a beach right at the trailhead. From there it runs another 12 miles north, directly along Mullett Lake's shore, before cutting inland through farmland into Cheboygan. Crushed limestone the whole way — bring your own bike.
On the water & on the trail

Outdoors

What's the fishing like on Mullett Lake?
Deep and serious — 148 feet at the bottom, with walleye, muskellunge, northern pike, and multiple trout species, plus the Michigan state-record lake sturgeon pulled from these waters. MFM Sport Fishing Charter runs guided walleye and pike trips out of Cheboygan, best late summer into fall, from $650 for a half-day.
Where can you launch a boat on Mullett Lake?
Aloha State Park's boat basin is the main public put-in, protected rather than open to the lake directly. For slips or storage, Anchor In Marina sits on the corridor between Topinabee and Cheboygan, and Cheboygan County Marina covers the river end, where the lake's outflow meets the locks to Lake Huron.
With the family

Kids

Is Mullett Lake good for families with kids?
Yes. Aloha State Park's two beaches and protected boat basin work for younger swimmers better than open water off a dock. The History Center's log cabin and jail hold a rainy afternoon, and Duncan City Pizza or Great Lakes Grill both run real kids' menus rather than an afterthought.
With the dog

Pets

Is Mullett Lake dog-friendly?
Reasonably. The North Central State Trail allows leashed dogs the full 12 miles between Topinabee and Cheboygan, and Aloha State Park's trails and campground do too, though the swimming beaches restrict dogs in season the way most Michigan state parks do. Check current park rules before a summer visit.
Seasons & weather

When to come

When's the best time to visit Mullett Lake?
June through August for full water access, both Aloha State Park beaches open, and Breakers' patio running. Late September brings Golden River Orchard's u-pick pumpkins and thinner crowds on the state trail. Winter shifts the whole lake to ice fishing and snowmobile traffic — Breakers still takes arrivals by sled.
Working from the lake

Wi-Fi & remote work

Can you work remotely from Mullett Lake?
Cheboygan Coffee Roasters downtown is the reliable option for a multi-hour work session. Topinabee itself is thinner on connectivity — a lakefront rental's own Wi-Fi is worth confirming before planning a full workday there rather than making the drive up to Cheboygan each morning.
