Yes — it's a short, flat walk from the North Lake parking lot to the clearing where a 250-room resort hotel stood from 1823 until the state burned it in 1963. Only the gateposts remain, but the Hudson Valley view that made the location famous is unchanged. Go for sunrise if the alarm doesn't put you off.

Is Kaaterskill Falls safe to hike?
Only if you stay on the marked trail. At least nine hikers have died here since 1988, most in the last decade while climbing off-trail or leaning past barriers for a photo near the top ledge. The rocks stay wet and slick regardless of season. Use the upper trailhead off Laurel House Road — the old roadside lot is permanently closed — and treat every railing as the actual edge, not a suggestion.
What are the best hikes near North-South Lake?
Sunset Rock and Boulder Rock are the two to prioritize — both under two miles round trip from the North Lake lot, both with real Hudson Valley views. Kaaterskill High Peak is the serious option if the group wants a full summit rather than an overlook. All three start from parking that fills early on clear weekends.

Can you rent a boat at North-South Lake?
Yes, but non-motorized only — the campground's own concession rents canoes, rowboats, kayaks, and paddleboards for about $15 a rental day, defined as 9 AM to 4 PM. There's no marina and no gas-powered boats on this lake at all, which is part of what keeps it quiet compared to a Finger Lake.
