Answers, not algorithms.

The questions travelers actually Google before they arrive — and the answers you'd get from a friend who lives on Walloon Lake.

Getting there & around

Logistics

What's the closest airport to Walloon Lake?
Pellston Regional Airport (PLN), about twenty-five minutes north, runs limited commercial service, mostly seasonal. Most visitors fly into Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City, roughly an hour southwest, or connect through Detroit. Petoskey itself has no commercial service, so factor drive time into an early check-in.
How far is Walloon Lake Village from downtown Petoskey?
About eight minutes south on US-131, then west onto M-75 — under six miles door to door. Boyne City runs about fifteen minutes from the lake's south end. Both towns sit close enough to treat as extensions of a Walloon Lake week rather than separate day trips.
Is there parking at the Walloon Lake Village public beach?
Yes, free lot parking at Melrose Township Park, right where M-75 meets West Street. It fills by early afternoon on a July weekend along with the boat trailer spots. Jones Landing, on the lake's northeast side off Gruler Road, has more room and rarely reaches capacity.
Groceries, gas, urgent care

Essentials

Where's the closest hospital to Walloon Lake?
McLaren Northern Michigan on Connable Avenue in Petoskey, about fifteen minutes from Walloon Lake Village, with a 24-hour emergency department and nearly every specialty on staff. It's a full regional hospital, not a satellite clinic — the right call for anything serious rather than driving further.
Where's the nearest pharmacy to Walloon Lake?
Walgreens on Spring Street in Petoskey, about fifteen minutes from the lake. Pharmacy hours run shorter than the store's — closed for lunch on weekdays, limited on Sunday — so call ahead for a refill rather than assuming a walk-in works right after dinner.
Where's the closest full grocery store to Walloon Lake?
Toski Sands Market on M-119 in Petoskey covers groceries, a full meat and seafood counter, and wine in one stop, open to 7 most nights. On the lake's south end, Family Fare in Boyne City has its own pharmacy counter and saves the longer drive north.
Is there a hardware store near Walloon Lake?
Not inside the lake's three core towns — the nearest Ace Hardware is about twenty minutes northwest in Charlevoix, on M-66. For anything urgent on a weekend, Toski Sands and the Petoskey grocery stores carry basic supplies, but plan the Charlevoix trip for an actual repair.
Where to eat

Food & drink

Is there dock-and-dine on Walloon Lake?
Yes — Barrel Back has private slips at Legacy Water Sports directly below the restaurant, and Walloon Lake Inn keeps its own dock at the foot of the lake for guests arriving by boat. Both run the full season; call ahead on a holiday weekend since slip space is limited.
Where do locals actually eat around Walloon Lake?
The Junction, Thursday through Sunday only — closed the rest of the week even in July, which keeps the crowd local. In Petoskey, City Park Grill's bar side over the tourist dining room, and Julienne Tomatoes for a weekday breakfast before the day-trippers find it.
What wineries are close to Walloon Lake?
Walloon Lake Winery, a mile from the water on Intertown Road, pours cold-hardy estate wines from a stacked-cordwood tasting room. Mackinaw Trail Winery & Brewery, north on US-131, splits the difference between wine and craft beer for a group that can't agree on one or the other.
What's the best restaurant with a lake view on Walloon Lake?
Barrel Back's cantilevered deck, glass garage doors open on a clear evening, with Legacy Water Sports' docks directly below. Walloon Lake Inn's porch, at the foot of the lake, is the quieter alternative for a dinner reservation rather than a bar scene.
What's worth doing

Things to do

Where are the Hemingway sites on Walloon Lake?
Windemere Cottage, on the north shore, is where Hemingway summered from age one to twenty-one — a National Historic Landmark, still privately owned, not open for tours. Horton Bay General Store, four miles by the old walking route, is the real 1876 store from his short stories, still operating today.
What's there to do around Walloon Lake when it rains?
Crooked Tree Arts Center's galleries and performance calendar in Petoskey. Beards Brewery's basement Root Cellar lounge, with board games and vinyl. Grandpa Shorter's Gifts for an hour of browsing if the Petoskey stone hunt at the state park got rained out.
Where can you find Petoskey stones near Walloon Lake?
Petoskey State Park's beach on Little Traverse Bay, about twenty minutes from Walloon Lake, is the reliable public hunting ground for Michigan's state stone. If the beach search comes up empty, Grandpa Shorter's Gifts in downtown Petoskey has sold polished ones since 1946.
On the water & on the trail

Outdoors

Where can you swim on Walloon Lake?
Melrose Township Park's downtown beach has a gradual sandy bottom and a roped-off kids' area. Jones Landing, on the northeast shore, is quieter, with a buoyed swim zone and full accessibility. Both are free public beaches, and neither requires a permit.
Where can you rent a boat on Walloon Lake?
Legacy Water Sports & Marina, downtown below Barrel Back, rents bowriders, pontoons, jet skis, and wake boats by the day, with the lake's only on-water fuel dock attached. Book ahead for a July weekend — same-day walk-up rentals thin out fast once school lets out.
Where's the best sunset spot on Walloon Lake?
Barrel Back's cantilevered deck faces the water directly, glass doors open on a clear night. For something quieter, Walloon Lake Winery's tasting room looks west over the vines instead of the lake — a different golden hour, glass of estate wine instead of a boat rail.
With the family

Kids

Is Walloon Lake good for a family with kids?
Yes. Melrose Township Park's gradual beach and Jones Landing's buoyed swim area both work for younger swimmers, and Jones Landing is fully wheelchair accessible. Sweet Tooth's ice cream counter and Coveyou Farm Market's hillside stand round out a family afternoon without much driving.
With the dog

Pets

Is Walloon Lake dog-friendly?
Reasonably. Jones Landing and North Shore Nature Area both allow leashed dogs; Melrose Township Park's swim area gets busier and less consistent about it in season. The Bear River Valley trail through Petoskey and the Little Traverse Wheelway both welcome dogs on leash for a longer walk.
Seasons & weather

When to come

When's the best time to visit Walloon Lake?
Late June through early September for full water access and every seasonal restaurant and farm stand open. Coveyou Scenic Farm Market runs April through October, so a shoulder-season trip still has somewhere to stop. Winter closes the docks and most seasonal kitchens entirely.
Can you visit Hemingway's Windemere Cottage?
No — it's still privately owned by Hemingway's family and not open for tours, despite the National Historic Landmark designation. The visit is a drive along the north shore and a look from the water or road; Horton Bay General Store, four miles away, is the Hemingway site you can actually walk into.
Working from the lake

Wi-Fi & remote work

Is Wi-Fi reliable enough to work remotely at Walloon Lake?
In the villages, yes — Roast & Toast in Petoskey and the Crooked Tree District Library's Walloon Lake branch both work for a multi-hour session. Out on the lake, cell coverage and rental Wi-Fi get inconsistent by the west and south shores, so confirm a specific rental's connection first.
