Getting there & around

Logistics

How deep is West Okoboji Lake?
136 feet at its deepest point, the deepest natural lake in Iowa. It formed roughly 17,000 years ago when a retreating glacial lobe buried a block of ice that later melted out into a deep tunnel valley, in Dickinson County in Iowa's far northwest corner.
Is West Okoboji really one of three "blue water lakes" in the world?
That's local tourism lore, not a scientific fact. West Okoboji is widely marketed alongside Switzerland's Lake Geneva and Canada's Lake Louise as one of three "blue water lakes," but the Iowa DNR itself says "blue water lake" isn't a recognized scientific classification.
What's the closest airport to West Okoboji Lake?
Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD), about 100 miles northwest, is the closest with regular commercial service. Fort Dodge Regional (FOD) is geographically closer but has limited scheduled service.

Are West Okoboji and East Okoboji the same lake?
No — they're two distinct, adjacent lakes connected by a narrow channel near Arnolds Park. West Okoboji is the deep, clear lake; East Okoboji is shallower and warmer. Locals often group both, plus Spirit Lake, under the umbrella term "the Okobojis" or "Iowa Great Lakes."
