Houghton Lake · The table & the tap

Where to eat. Where to drink.

Restaurants we'd send our parents to, breweries we'd send our brother-in-law to. Filtered by quadrant where it matters — sun on the dock at six, dinner by seven.

  • Houghton Lake
    The Limberlost
    Editor's pick

A bar and restaurant on the same spot since 1933, named for the Gene Stratton-Porter novel — the building has been a hospital, a hotel, and reportedly a brothel before it settled into burgers, steaks, and ribs. The downstairs patio sits right on the water, reachable by boat in summer or by snowmobile once the lake freezes. Live music runs through summer. Currently closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays on reduced staffing — call ahead before making the drive.

  • Houghton Lake
    L.J.'s Kilkare Inn

A bar-restaurant on W. Houghton Lake Drive that ranks #8 of 26 restaurants in town on TripAdvisor after more than a hundred reviews — full bar, big groups, and a lake perch plate that's the reason regulars keep coming back despite service that can be slow on a packed Friday. Takeout available. Go for the perch, not the ambiance.

  • Houghton Lake
    The Fox Den Restaurant

Tucked inside The Northern Center on Stone School Road — a banquet-and-event venue that also runs a public dining room, dinner only, Tuesday through Sunday. Closed Mondays. It reads as a step up from the strip's bar-and-grill default: a calmer room for a table that doesn't need a game on the TV. Reservations recommended on a weekend the venue has a wedding booked.

    Tue–Fri 4–9pm, Sat–Sun 4–8pm, closed Mon(989) 202-4888Visit site ↗
  • Houghton Lake
    Buccilli's Pizza

An Italian kitchen on W. Houghton Lake Drive doing pizza and pasta rather than the perch-and-burger default up and down the strip. Closed Sunday and Monday, open till 10 on Friday and Saturday for the late dinner crowd coming off the water. The reliable answer for a table of kids who've had enough walleye for one vacation.

    Tue–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri–Sat 11am–10pm, closed Sun–MonVisit site ↗
  • Houghton Lake
    Shaker's Restaurant & Lounge

Open 6am to 9pm daily, which makes it one of the only places in town covering breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a lounge pour in one stop. Draws a younger crowd at the bar after dark and a couples-on-a-slow-morning crowd earlier in the day — two different rooms depending on when you walk in. On W. Houghton Lake Drive.

  • Houghton Lake
    Back Door Saloon

A bar and grill on W. Houghton Lake Drive that stays open until 1am on Fridays — later than most of the strip — and closes entirely on Sundays. Drinks first, food second, and a crowd that treats it as the after-dinner stop once the family restaurants down the road have closed for the night.

    Mon–Thu 11am–11pm, Fri 11am–1am, Sat 11am–11pm, closed Sun(989) 202-4800Visit site ↗
  • Houghton Lake
    M55 Pour House
    Editor's pick

Twenty taps, mostly Michigan craft, in a steakhouse-and-sports-bar room that's the closest thing Houghton Lake has to a dedicated beer bar — there's no standalone brewery in town. A pool table, wifi, and live music on weeknights through the season. Closed Sundays, open until 2am the rest of the week. The pick for anyone missing a craft-beer list after a day on the lake.

    Mon, Tue–Sat 11am–2am, closed Sun(989) 366-4131
  • Houghton Lake
    Great Lakes Family Restaurant

Homestyle cooking with an Amish lean — sausage gravy, blueberry pie, breakfast served all day alongside a full lunch and dinner menu, open daily 7am to 8pm. A sister location runs in Ithaca, but this is the one built for lake traffic: the easy stop for a family that wants pancakes at 4pm without an argument.

  • Houghton Lake
    TJ Loopie's Sips & Sweets
    Editor's pick

Rolled ice cream, cheesecake, and cupcakes made to order, open noon to 7pm and closed Sundays and Mondays. The rolled-ice-cream counter is the draw — cold cream spread thin on a steel plate, scraped into curls while you watch — and it's a genuinely different stop from the soft-serve stands that fill the rest of the strip.

  • Houghton Lake
    Tip Top Ice Cream Shop

A straightforward soft-serve and hard-scoop counter on E. Houghton Lake Drive — no theme, no gimmick, just the stop locals actually use on a July evening instead of driving into town for it. Cash tends to move faster than cards during a Saturday-night rush, and the line is shortest right after dinner, before the after-fireworks crowd finds it.
