Getting there & around

Logistics

What's the closest airport to Houghton Lake?
MBS International Airport near Saginaw/Freeland is the nearest with commercial service — about 80 miles and roughly an hour and ten minutes southeast. Most drivers instead take I-75 north to Grayling, then M-55 west into town, which also works fine coming from Detroit or Flint without flying at all.
How far is Houghton Lake from Detroit?
About 195 miles, roughly three hours via I-75 north to Grayling and then M-55 west — a straightforward, single-highway drive that stays inside Michigan the whole way. It's an easy day trip up, though most visitors are staying the week rather than driving back down the same night.
Is parking difficult during Tip-Up Town USA?
Yes — late January draws the festival's biggest crowds of the year onto and around the frozen lake, and W. Houghton Lake Drive backs up accordingly. The Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce, at 1625 W. Houghton Lake Dr., is the information hub; plan to walk from wherever you can find a spot rather than circling for one close in.
Groceries, gas, urgent care

Essentials

Where's the closest full grocery store to Houghton Lake?
Family Fare on W. Houghton Lake Drive, open daily 7am to 9pm, with bakery, deli, meat and seafood counters, and an in-store pharmacy. It's the only full supermarket actually on the lake — the next-nearest options are a 25-minute drive out toward Clare or Roscommon.
Is there a pharmacy in Houghton Lake?
Yes — Family Fare's grocery store on W. Houghton Lake Drive runs an in-store pharmacy, which covers most needs without a separate drive. There's no standalone CVS or Walgreens directly in town; the nearest chain pharmacies are out toward Clare or West Branch.
Where's the closest urgent care to Houghton Lake?
Munson Healthcare Prudenville Urgent Care, on W. Houghton Lake Drive, open Monday through Saturday 7am to 7pm, walk-ins welcome. For anything past what urgent care can handle, the nearest 24-hour emergency room is Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital, about 25 miles and 30 minutes east via M-55 and I-75.
Where to eat

Food & drink

Is there dock-and-dine on Houghton Lake?
The Limberlost is the one to know — a lakeside patio reachable by boat all summer and, once the ice sets, by snowmobile. It's operated at the same spot since 1933. Currently closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays on reduced staffing, so call ahead before planning a boat trip around it.
Where's the best breakfast around Houghton Lake?
Little Boots Country Diner's cowboy breakfast and strawberry pancakes, open 7am to 8pm daily. Great Lakes Family Restaurant runs breakfast all day alongside lunch and dinner if the timing's off. For coffee and a pastry instead of a full plate, Uncharted Grounds on E. Houghton Lake Drive is the better stop.
Is there a brewery on Houghton Lake?
No standalone brewery in town. M55 Pour House comes closest — twenty taps, mostly Michigan craft, in a steakhouse-and-sports-bar room with live music on weeknights through the season. It's a beer bar rather than a brewery, but it's the real answer if a craft-beer list matters to the trip.
What's worth doing

Things to do

What is Tip-Up Town USA?
A winter festival held on the frozen lake in late January, run by the Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce since 1951 — 76 years running as of 2026. Tip-up ice fishing, a polar bear plunge, a parade, a medallion hunt, and the Tip-'Pup' Town dog show. One of the oldest and largest winter festivals in Michigan.
What's there to do around Houghton Lake when the weather's bad?
Lakeland Recreation's arcade covers a couple of hours regardless of weather, alongside its outdoor go-karts and mini golf. The Houghton Lake Historical Playhouse & Village — a 1926 dance hall turned summer stock theater — runs Village Days with pioneer-craft demonstrations Fridays and Saturdays in summer, rain or shine.
On the water & on the trail

Outdoors

Where can you launch a boat on Houghton Lake?
Three DNR ramps ring the lake — South in Denton Township (153 spaces, the largest), West in Lake Township (89 spaces), and East in Markey Township (42 spaces) — all requiring a Michigan Recreation Passport. Brian's Lakeside Marina on W. Houghton Lake Drive covers rentals for anyone without a boat of their own.
What fish can you catch in Houghton Lake?
Walleye, northern pike, bass, bluegill, and crappie — the lake's shallow, warm water doesn't support trout, salmon, or muskellunge. Bayside Bait & Tackle and Lyman's on the Lake both stock live minnows, crawlers, and leeches. Winter fishing centers on Tip-Up Town USA, when the ice fills with shanties every January.
With the family

Kids

Is Houghton Lake good for kids?
Yes — this is a family lake first. Lakeland Recreation's mini golf, go-karts, and bumper boats fill an afternoon; TJ Loopie's rolled ice cream is the reward after. Tip-Up Town USA runs a dedicated Kids Day and a dog show every January, and the lake's shallow, warm water makes swimming easy for younger kids by July.
With the dog

Pets

Is Houghton Lake dog-friendly?
Reasonably. Tip-Up Town USA runs its own Tip-'Pup' Town dog show every January, and the state forest campground on the north shore allows leashed dogs at the campsites. Most restaurant patios don't explicitly advertise a dog policy, so it's worth calling ahead rather than assuming.
Seasons & weather

When to come

When's the best time to visit Houghton Lake?
Late June through August for full boat and beach season — the lake's shallow water warms fast, so swimming is comfortable earlier than on deeper Michigan lakes. Late January is the other real season here: Tip-Up Town USA fills the frozen lake with ice shanties and turns the whole town toward winter recreation instead of shutting down.
Is Houghton Lake safe to drive or walk on when it's frozen?
It depends on the winter and the spot — the lake's shallow average depth means it freezes reliably, which is why Tip-Up Town USA can be held on the ice every January, but conditions vary year to year, especially near inlets. Check current conditions through the Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce before heading out; don't assume from a prior trip.
Working from the lake

Wi-Fi & remote work

Can you work remotely from Houghton Lake?
It's doable but limited. Uncharted Grounds on E. Houghton Lake Drive and Starbucks in Prudenville both handle a laptop session; M55 Pour House also has wifi if a bar setting works. This is a smaller market than the Finger Lakes or New England lake towns — don't expect a deep bench of coworking-style cafes.
