A nuclear plant's cooling reservoir with a warm-water side.
Lake Anna is a 13,000-acre Piedmont reservoir Dominion Energy built in the 1960s and '70s to cool the North Anna Power Station — a working nuclear plant whose discharge canal keeps the lake's 'hot side' swimmable well past a typical Virginia lake season.
Lake Anna spans Louisa, Spotsylvania, Orange, and Fauquier counties in Virginia's Piedmont, built to cool the North Anna Power Station's two nuclear reactor units, online since 1978 and 1980. Mineral holds the lake's restaurant and marina cluster — The Cove and Lake Anna Taphouse for dining, Lake Anna Marina and Anna Point Marina for boating. Pleasants Landing, at the south end, is Louisa County's only public-access marina and beach; Lake Anna State Park, on the Spotsylvania side, adds a guarded swim beach. No full hospital sits inside Louisa County itself — the nearest ERs are in Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, and Culpeper.
