Lake Leelanau

The lake behind Fishtown.

A twenty-one-mile lake bent around a village called the Narrows, where the wineries tie up boats instead of cars — and a postcard fishing harbor three miles downriver that isn't actually on the lake at all.

About Lake Leelanau

Lake Leelanau runs twenty-one miles down the spine of the Leelanau Peninsula in a dog-leg bend, pinched at the middle into a channel everyone calls the Narrows, where Lake Leelanau Village sits with a marina, a yacht club, and the one true boat-up winery on the water — tie up at Boathouse Vineyards and walk straight into the tasting room. That village, not Leland, is the actual waterfront center: Fiddleheads runs a full bar off the breakfast counter, Northern Latitudes pours cocktails a block from the fuel dock, and NJ's Grocery reopened after a 2025 fire because the village couldn't run without it. Leland gets the postcard, and earns it a different way. Fishtown sits on the Leland River, not the lake itself — a working Great Lakes fishing village since the early 1900s, where Carlson's Fishery still smokes a thousand pounds of whitefish an hour out of the same shanty opened in 1904. The river drops through a historic dam from Lake Leelanau to Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands, the view from The Cove and the Riverside Inn's dock, not the lake this guide is built around. Get the geography right before booking a rental expecting lake frontage in Leland proper — the shoreline is a few minutes inland, at Bartholomew Park on Pearl Street. Suttons Bay is the third register: Grand Traverse Bay frontage, a few minutes east, carrying the region's brewery and dinner-reservation density — Hop Lot's beer garden, Martha's Leelanau Table on a Friday, Boone's on a weeknight instead. In between, Horn Road carries three wineries within walking distance of each other, and seven sit within a fifteen-minute drive of the water, from Aurora Cellars to 45 North to MAWBY's sparkling-only deck. Late June through Labor Day runs every dock and tasting room at once; late September into October trades swimming weather for cherry-country foliage and a wine trail with no wait at any counter.
