Answers, not algorithms.

The questions travelers actually Google before they arrive — and the answers you'd get from a friend who lives on Lake Memphremagog.

Getting there & around

Logistics

What's the closest airport to Lake Memphremagog?
Burlington International (BTV), about an hour and 45 minutes southwest, is the practical commercial option with the widest flight selection. Montreal-Trudeau is closer in miles but adds an international border crossing to the drive. There's a small municipal airstrip in Newport itself, but it has no scheduled commercial service.
Can you boat from the U.S. side of Lake Memphremagog into Canada?
Yes, but you have to clear customs the moment you dock, anchor, or touch land on the other side — cruising near the far shore without landing doesn't require it. Clear back into the U.S. through the CBP ROAM app or the self-service kiosk at Newport City Dock, which runs on the marina's posted customs Wi-Fi. Bring passports for everyone aboard.
How far apart are Newport and Derby?
About ten minutes by car, closer if you're on the Beebe Spur Rail Trail by bike — the four-mile crushed-stone path runs along the lake's eastern shore between the two. Derby Line, the border village where the Haskell Free Library sits, is another ten minutes past Derby proper, right up against Quebec.
Groceries, gas, urgent care

Essentials

Where's the closest real grocery store to Lake Memphremagog?
Vista Food at Waterfront Plaza in downtown Newport is the actual supermarket for a lake stay, with Rite Aid a few doors down for a pharmacy. Newport Natural Market on Main Street covers specialty items the supermarket skips. There's no hardware store or liquor store directly on the water — Dollar General covers the basics in a pinch.
Where's the closest hospital or emergency room to Lake Memphremagog?
North Country Hospital on Prouty Drive in Newport runs a full emergency department and is the region's largest employer — the real ER for the entire lake, U.S. or Canadian side. Rite Aid and the independent Brown's Drug Store in Derby Line cover prescriptions; neither is open 24 hours, so plan refills before a trip rather than after.
Where to eat

Food & drink

Where do locals actually eat around Lake Memphremagog?
Miller's Pub on Mt. Vernon Street and Jasper's Tavern off Main Street, the Northeast Kingdom's oldest dive bar, are where Newport eats and drinks on a random Tuesday — not the waterfront spots built for a view. Kingdom Brewing's Friday-Saturday taproom in Newport Center pulls the same regulars most weekends.
Is Lago Trattoria in Newport still open?
No. Some directories still list it, but it's closed — the restaurant's old domain now redirects to an unrelated business, and Yelp confirms the closure. Dusit Thai Cuisine, a few doors down on Main Street, is the strongest sit-down option left in downtown Newport, ranked highest of any restaurant in the city.
Is there a real dock-and-dine restaurant on Lake Memphremagog?
The Eastside Restaurant & Pub, part of the Gray's Landing complex on Landing Street in Newport, has its own floating docks — tie up and walk straight in. The menu runs from burgers to prime rib with a salad bar, and the Dancing Sail banquet room handles weddings. Closed Tuesdays.
What's worth doing

Things to do

Is Hill Farmstead Brewery worth the drive from Lake Memphremagog?
Yes, with planning. RateBeer named it the best brewery in the world roughly seven years running through the late 2010s, and current rankings still put it among the world's top ten — but most of what's worth the 35-minute drive to Greensboro Bend sells out by early afternoon. Go Wednesday or Thursday; weekends and foliage season mean a real line.
Is Jay Peak worth visiting in the summer, or is it just a ski mountain?
Both, genuinely. Jay Peak is 20 minutes from Newport and known for the heaviest natural snowfall in the East come winter, but summer brings the Pump House Indoor Waterpark and a championship golf course now in its 20th season. The resort turns 70 in 2026. A rainy August afternoon and a January powder day are both legitimate reasons to make the drive.
Is Montreal close enough for a day trip from Lake Memphremagog?
Yes — Montreal runs about an hour and 45 minutes from Newport once you're through the Derby Line border crossing and onto Quebec's Autoroute 55. Build in extra time at the crossing on summer weekends. It's a full day, not a half-day detour, so plan around one trip during a week-long stay rather than a quick lunch run.
What's there to do around Lake Memphremagog when it rains?
The Haskell Free Library & Opera House in Derby Line is worth the drive regardless of weather — a working library with the U.S.–Canada border marked by a black line across the floor. Dailey Memorial Library in Derby is a smaller, quieter fallback. Beyond that, options thin out fast; a tasting flight at Kingdom Brewing on a Friday or Saturday is the other real indoor option.
On the water & on the trail

Outdoors

Where's the best place to swim at Lake Memphremagog?
Prouty Beach in Newport is the real public swimming beach — sandy, lifeguarded in season, with a boat ramp and campground attached. It's also the most crowded option on a July weekend. South Bay's quieter water works for a paddle-and-swim combination if you're avoiding the beach scene entirely.
Is Lake Memphremagog good for fishing?
Yes — it's one of Vermont's better-known walleye lakes, deep enough (over 300 feet at its max) to hold fish through the summer heat that shallower Northeast Kingdom lakes lose. The Great Outdoors on Waterfront Plaza sells tackle and licenses without a special trip to a dedicated bait shop. South Bay's warmer, weedier water on the south end is the better bet for bass and panfish.
With the family

Kids

Is Lake Memphremagog good for a family with kids?
Prouty Beach in Newport is the answer — a real sandy swimming beach, a free nine-hole disc golf course, and a campground playground all in one 35-acre park. The Beebe Spur Rail Trail is flat and paved enough for training wheels. Jay Peak's indoor waterpark covers a rainy day twenty minutes away.
With the dog

Pets

How dog-friendly is Lake Memphremagog?
Reasonably. The Beebe Spur Rail Trail and Memphremagog Trails' double-track sections are both fine for a leashed dog, and Kingdom Brewing's outdoor Brewcabin doesn't mind one at a picnic table. South Bay Wildlife Management Area works for a dog that wants to swim away from beach crowds. Prouty Beach itself restricts dogs on the swimming beach in summer season.
Seasons & weather

When to come

When's the best time to visit Lake Memphremagog?
Late June through early September for warm water, a full boating season at Newport City Dock, and every seasonal business actually open — Sweet Scoops, the marina rentals, Kingdom Brewing's full weekend schedule. Fall foliage in late September draws its own crowd for the drive up Route 5, with lines to match at Hill Farmstead.
Is there anything to do at Lake Memphremagog in the winter?
Yes — Memphremagog Trails grooms its singletrack for cross-country skiing once snow sets in, and the Beebe Spur Rail Trail takes skis and snowmobiles in designated season. Jay Peak, 20 minutes away, is the real draw for downhill. Most of Newport's seasonal restaurants and the marina close for the winter, so plan meals around what's open in town rather than on the water.
Working from the lake

Wi-Fi & remote work

Is there anywhere to work remotely near Lake Memphremagog?
Newport Natural Market's café on Main Street and Sol Cafe downtown are the two real options with coffee, tables, and Wi-Fi. Confirm broadband directly with a specific rental before counting on it — coverage in Newport proper is solid, but it thins out fast toward Derby Line and Newport Center.
