A 31-mile lake that crosses into Quebec.
The city dock in Newport runs a U.S. Customs kiosk because the lake keeps going long after the border does — thirty-one miles of cold glacial water reaching north into Quebec. Jay Peak holds snow twenty minutes west; Hill Farmstead's tasting-room line waits thirty-five minutes south.
Lake Memphremagog starts at Newport and doesn't stop being American for long — Quebec claims about three-quarters of its surface a few miles north. That's not trivia here; it's the actual shape of a stay. The city dock at Newport's Gateway Marina runs a self-service U.S. Customs kiosk on the CBP ROAM app, because boaters genuinely cross into Canadian water and have to clear back in before they tie up for the night. Newport itself is a real small city rather than a resort village: North Country Hospital anchors Prouty Drive as the county's largest employer, Vista Food and Rite Aid sit side by side at Waterfront Plaza, and Main Street runs from Dusit Thai's som tam to Jasper's Tavern, the Northeast Kingdom's oldest dive bar, inside about four blocks. The two headline draws sit at opposite ends of a half-hour drive. Jay Peak, twenty minutes west, turns from a ski mountain known for the heaviest natural snowfall in the East into an indoor-waterpark-and-golf resort by summer. Hill Farmstead, thirty-five minutes south in Greensboro Bend, spent roughly seven years as RateBeer's official best brewery in the world and still sells out its Wednesday taproom hours by early afternoon. Between the two, Kingdom Brewing pours a Friday-and-Saturday-only taproom on top of Coburn Hill, brewed with maple sap and spruce tips off its own land. On the water, Prouty Beach covers the actual swimming — sand, a boat ramp, free nine-hole disc golf — while the Beebe Spur Rail Trail runs four flat, crushed-stone miles along the eastern shore toward Derby Line, where the Haskell Free Library straddles the border with a black line across the reading-room floor. Memphremagog Trails' thirteen miles of singletrack fill the gap between the two towns. Late June wakes the whole season up at once; by October, more than half of this list has already closed for winter.
