Newfound Lake

27 feet of water clarity, verified for 40 years running.

Newfound Lake tests at nearly twice New Hampshire's water-clarity standard, and Wellington State Park's beach is the largest stretch of freshwater sand in the state. Four towns share 22 miles of undeveloped shoreline — no boardwalk, no strip of t-shirt shops, just Cardigan Mountain on the horizon and a Secchi disk that keeps coming back around 27 feet.

About Newfound Lake

Newfound Lake is a 4,451-acre glacial lake in New Hampshire's Lakes Region, split among four towns that share 22 miles of largely undeveloped shoreline — no boardwalk, no t-shirt strip, a fraction of Winnipesaukee's commercial density. Bristol anchors the south end: Central Square and Lake Street hold the town's restaurants and Shackett's Brewing Company, and Wellington State Park's beach is the largest stretch of freshwater sand in New Hampshire, with an on-site kayak rental counter built into the park itself. Hebron, the conservation-minded north end, is where the Newfound Lake Region Association's Audubon sanctuary and Paradise Point sit — the same organization that took over what was once Newfound Lake Marina in 2011 and removed the docks entirely, turning the property into Grey Rocks Conservation Area, non-motorized use only. Bridgewater, on the west shore, holds an 1840s inn and little else; Alexandria, inland, is Cardigan Mountain's town, the peak that fills the horizon from most points on the lake. The water itself is the real headline: the Newfound Lake Region Association has run Secchi-disk clarity testing for 40 years, and the ten-year median comes in around 27 feet — nearly twice New Hampshire's own 13.1-foot threshold for high water quality. Cardigan Country Store, Newfound Country Store's 24-hour pumps, and Bristol House of Pizza cover the essentials most lake towns take for granted; Speare Memorial Hospital's emergency department in Plymouth is the nearest real ER. This isn't a lake with a marketing budget — it's one with four decades of its own water-quality data and a beach it doesn't need to oversell.
