Getting there & around

Logistics

How do you get to Lake Winnisquam?
Take I-93 to Exit 20 — the lake sits right off the highway, with Tilton and Belmont on the southern basin within five minutes of the ramp. That's the whole appeal over Winnipesaukee: there's no additional forty minutes of two-lane driving once you leave the interstate. Laconia's Ahern State Park side adds another ten minutes around the western shore.
What's the closest airport to Lake Winnisquam?
Manchester-Boston Regional (MHT) is the practical choice, about 40 minutes south on I-93 with a full range of commercial carriers. Concord Municipal Airport is closer but handles only small private and charter traffic. Boston Logan works for international connections but adds real drive time — figure closer to two hours depending on traffic through Concord.
Should I stay on the Belmont/Tilton side or the Laconia side of Lake Winnisquam?
Belmont and Tilton put you closest to Exit 20, Winnisquam Marine, Tanger Outlets, and the Pot Island sandbar — the convenience pick. Laconia's western shore is quieter, with Ahern State Park's undeveloped shoreline and Bartlett Beach, plus a shorter drive into downtown Laconia's restaurants. First boat rental and a quick outlet run: Belmont. A calmer week with more shoreline to yourself: Laconia.
Is parking difficult at Lake Winnisquam's beaches and boat ramps?
Rarely — this isn't Winnipesaukee. Bartlett Beach and the Water Street public boat ramp in Laconia both have free lots that fill on the best July weekends but not much earlier than that. Leslie E. Roberts Beach in Belmont requires a resident decal, so non-residents should plan on Bartlett Beach or a marina launch instead.
Groceries, gas, urgent care

Essentials

Where's the closest grocery store to Lake Winnisquam?
Shaw's on Daniel Webster Highway in Belmont covers the Belmont and Tilton side, with a pharmacy counter and DriveUp & Go pickup. Hannaford in Gilford, about ten minutes from Ahern State Park and Bartlett Beach, is the better call for the Laconia side. Both run full pharmacy counters, so pick whichever matches which shore the rental sits on.
Where's the closest urgent care near Lake Winnisquam?
ConvenientMD on Daniel Webster Highway in Belmont and ClearChoiceMD on Laconia Road in Tilton both run walk-in hours 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily — pick whichever is closer to the rental. For anything serious, Concord Hospital's Laconia emergency department on Highland Street runs a 24-hour ER, about ten to fifteen minutes from most points on the lake.
Where can I pick up liquor or hardware supplies near Lake Winnisquam?
NH Liquor & Wine Outlets sit in both Tilton (Market Street, near Tanger Outlets) and Belmont (Belknap Mall) — state-run, so pricing runs below neighboring states. True Value on Main Street in Belmont covers the propane exchange and dock hardware nobody packed. Both towns are small enough that neither stop takes more than a few minutes out of the day.
Where to eat

Food & drink

Where do locals eat around Lake Winnisquam?
Water Street Cafe and The Flip Side in downtown Laconia both draw the breakfast-and-lunch regulars over the tourist strip. Kettlehead Brewing Company in Tilton pulls a genuine local crowd, not just lake traffic, which is part of why it keeps winning Best of NH. Tilt'n Diner is the exception — everyone eats there, tourists and locals both.
Where's a good breakfast spot near Lake Winnisquam?
J&J's Yolk & Co. in Belmont for the lobster Benedict, mornings only, closed by 2 p.m. Water Street Cafe in Laconia for a table with a dog-friendly patio in season. Tilt'n Diner in Tilton if the group wants breakfast served all day, not just before ten. All three fill up on weekend mornings by nine.
Is Kettlehead Brewing Company worth visiting?
Yes — it's collected more Best of NH and Best of the Lakes Region wins than any other brewery in the state, including 2025 Brewery of the Year, and the taplist rotates weekly enough to reward a repeat visit. Full kitchen and a game room make it work for families, not just a beer crowd. Check online before driving over; the popular pours run out by Saturday afternoon.
What's worth doing

Things to do

What is the Pot Island sandbar and how do you find it?
A shallow sand shelf at the lake's southwest end, just north of the Route 3 bridge in Tilton, where boats raft together in waist-deep water most summer weekends — the lake's real social center. Anchor on the upstream side of the pack and wade in rather than nosing a bow straight onto the sand; the drop-offs come up fast at the edges. Bring a cooler float and expect company.
What's there to do around Lake Winnisquam when it rains?
Smitty's Cinema in Tilton runs seven screens with a full kitchen and bar built into the auditoriums. Tanger Outlets, right at Exit 20, covers a few hours of shopping with EV charging and a kids' play area. Defiant Records & Craft Beer in downtown Laconia pairs a rotating tap list with vinyl browsing for the adults in the group.
How does Lake Winnisquam compare to Lake Winnipesaukee?
Less traffic on the water and less commercial buildup on shore, with rental rates that run below Winnipesaukee's marina prices — but similar powerboating, wakesurfing, and a sandbar culture of its own at Pot Island. Winnisquam sits five minutes off I-93 Exit 20, closer to the highway than most of Winnipesaukee's towns. The tradeoff: fewer restaurants, no steamboat cruise, and a smaller lake overall at 4,214 acres against Winnipesaukee's 44,000.
On the water & on the trail

Outdoors

Where can I rent a boat on Lake Winnisquam?
Winnisquam Marine in Belmont runs the lake's main rental fleet — more than 35 pontoons, bowriders, and deck boats, with a same-day 14-day boating certificate available for renters who don't already have one. Winni Landing in Tilton handles slips and valet service rather than rentals, useful if you're bringing your own boat and want it near the Pot Island bridge.
What's the best trail for walking or biking near Lake Winnisquam?
The combined WOW Trail and Winnisquam Scenic Trail run more than six paved, mostly flat miles from Lakeport through downtown Laconia into Belmont, following an active rail corridor along Opechee Bay and the lake itself. For something steeper, Highland Mountain Bike Park in Northfield runs 38 lift-served downhill trails, seasonal through mid-November.
With the family

Kids

Is Lake Winnisquam good for families with kids?
Yes — Bartlett Beach and Leslie E. Roberts Beach both have playgrounds, Jordan's Ice Creamery and The Meltaway cover the after-swim reward, and Highland Mountain Bike Park is ten minutes away for older kids on a rainy or high-energy day. The Pot Island sandbar's waist-deep water works for kids who can stand, less so for infants who can't.
Where can kids swim safely at Lake Winnisquam?
Bartlett Beach in Laconia has no lifeguard, so treat it as a supervise-closely spot rather than a lifeguarded one. Leslie E. Roberts Beach in Belmont is staffed daily late June through mid-August but requires a resident decal for entry. For families without decal access, Bartlett Beach or a private dock with close supervision are the realistic options.
With the dog

Pets

How dog-friendly is Lake Winnisquam?
Reasonably — the WOW Trail and Winnisquam Scenic Trail both allow leashed dogs on the paved path, Ahern State Park's undeveloped shoreline is unstaffed and low-traffic enough for a dog to swim, and Water Street Cafe seats dogs on its patio in season. Bartlett Beach doesn't post a formal dog ban but has no real enforcement either way outside swim areas.
Seasons & weather

When to come

When's the best time to visit Lake Winnisquam?
Late June through early September for full swimming water temperatures and the Pot Island sandbar at its busiest. Early June and September trade the sandbar crowds for empty beaches and easier boat rental availability at Winnisquam Marine. Ahern State Park and the WOW Trail stay accessible into October for foliage, well past when the lake itself turns too cold to swim.
Working from the lake

Wi-Fi & remote work

Is Wi-Fi and cell service reliable around Lake Winnisquam?
Solid throughout — this isn't a remote Adirondack lake, and Exit 20's commercial strip keeps cell towers dense on both shores. Tilly Market Cafe in Belmont has a private meeting room and free Wi-Fi built for a half-day of work; Wayfarer Coffee Roasters' downtown Laconia location covers the other side of the lake through mid-afternoon.
