Lake Winnisquam

Winnipesaukee's quieter, cheaper neighbor.

Winnipesaukee's quieter cousin, five minutes off I-93 — the sandbar culture without the boat traffic, the marina rates without the markup.

About Lake Winnisquam

Lake Winnisquam sits immediately southwest of Winnipesaukee off I-93 Exit 20, New Hampshire's fourth-largest lake and the one most visitors drive past on the way to somewhere bigger. Belmont and Tilton anchor the southern basin — Winnisquam Marine's fleet of more than 35 pontoons and bowriders on Sunset Drive, a second valet-dock facility on the Tilton side, and Pot Island Sandbar just north of the Route 3 bridge, where a dozen boats raft together in waist-deep water on a summer Saturday. Exit 20 itself doubles as the area's commercial strip: Tanger Outlets, Smitty's Cinema, Kettlehead Brewing Company — reigning Best of NH Brewery of the Year — and Tilt'n Diner, running out of a real stainless-steel rail car until 9 or 10 most nights. Laconia's western shore takes a different tone entirely. Ahern State Park's undeveloped 128 acres and 3,500 feet of shoreline carry a mountain-biking trail network built and maintained by the local NEMBA chapter, with no staff, no bathrooms, and no fee. Bartlett Beach and the free, unstaffed Lake Winnisquam Public Boat Ramp sit a short walk apart at the end of Water Street. The WOW Trail and Belmont's Winnisquam Scenic Trail tie together into more than six miles of paved rail-trail connecting Laconia to Belmont, with Highland Mountain Bike Park's lift-served downhill runs ten minutes away in Northfield. Sanbornton, the lake's third shore, stays quiet and entirely residential — no commercial hub of its own, nothing to stop for. What Winnisquam sells is proximity without the premium: the same sandbar culture and marina access as Winnipesaukee, one exit south, at rental rates and crowd levels that haven't caught up yet.
